Echos Of Personal Tides is more than just stories; it's a celebration of the profound impact the ocean has on our lives.

My Own Ocean Obsession…

As a nature girl - that’s what my sister and I used to call our selves when we were young - I spent a lot of time on the coast of Southern Norway. Always obsessing over boat rides, playing on the rocks, jumping in the ocean, swimming. As long as I was close to the ocean it felt good and I felt free. It was a whole different world spending time down near the ocean then it was back in the South of London and The Netherlands where I went to school. Holidays in Norway were actually one of the best.

Moving to the East Coast of Australia resulted in a true obsession with the Ocean. I started to spend every day either in or close to the Ocean. I connected with people that were surfers, freedivers, Ocean tour guides, the Indigenous community, marine life and surf photographers. It opened up a whole new world for me. A world I now live in and want to bring you along in.

When my connection with the Ocean strengthened, I started to realise and understand that our connection with the Ocean extends beyond personal satisfaction; it’s a lifeline essential to our existence. Our connection with the Ocean involves responsibility. Awareness of Ocean conservation and sustainable practices is crucial to ensuring the health and vitality of marine ecosystems for future generations. Building a relationship with our Oceans is not just important, but needed. Caring for our Oceans is not just an environmental necessity; it’s a commitment to the preservation of our shared home.

You are more connected then you might think you are…

As a devoted Ocean enthusiast, I find myself constantly drawn to the untamed beauty and raw energy of the sea. It's more than just a passion – it's an obsession that fuels my spirit and inspires my art. But amidst the crashing waves and endless horizons lies a profound truth: the Ocean isn't just a backdrop to our lives or a holiday destination, it's a lifeline. Did you know that the Ocean produces over half of the world's oxygen? Or that it absorbs about 30% of carbon dioxide emissions, helping to regulate our climate? Beyond its role as Earth's lungs and climate buffer, the Ocean also provides sustenance for billions of people and supports diverse ecosystems.

Yet, despite its critical importance, the Ocean faces unprecedented threats from pollution, overfishing, and climate change. Oceans cover over 70% of Earth's surface, playing a crucial role in regulating climate and weather patterns. They are not just bodies of water; they are the heartbeat of our planet. Our connection with the Ocean goes beyond the picturesque waves and sandy shores; it is a lifeline that sustains life on Earth. Including yours.

Marine Life and Human Health

Healthy marine ecosystems not only support diverse and abundant marine life but also directly impact human health. Many pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics and cancer treatments, are derived from marine organisms. Additionally, seafood is a crucial source of protein and essential nutrients for billions of people worldwide, contributing to food security and nutrition.

Coral Reefs and Coastal Protection

Coral reefs act as natural barriers, protecting coastal communities from storms, erosion, and flooding. They also support a vast array of marine species, making them vital hubs of biodiversity. However, coral bleaching, often caused by rising ocean temperatures due to climate change, threatens the survival of these crucial ecosystems, leading to devastating consequences for both marine life and coastal communities.

Ocean's Role in Climate Regulation

The Ocean plays a crucial role in regulating the Earth's climate. Through processes like carbon sequestration and the global ocean conveyor belt, it helps stabilize temperatures and weather patterns worldwide. However, human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, contribute to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, leading to Ocean acidification, sea level rise, and disruptions in marine ecosystems.

Urban Connections to the Ocean

Even if you live far from the coast in a bustling city, your daily life is intricately linked to the Ocean. The Ocean influences weather patterns, providing rainfall that nourishes crops and sustains freshwater sources. Additionally, goods transported by sea contribute to global trade and supply chains, impacting economies and livelihoods around the world.

In essence, whether we realize it or not, the health of the Ocean directly affects our well-being and survival. By understanding and appreciating our connection to the Ocean, we can work together to protect and preserve this invaluable resource for future generations.

In this series, we explore the urgency of discussing these connections. As stewards of our planet, it's imperative to normalise conversations about the Ocean's significance. Our blue planet, often referred to as "planet ocean," demands our attention and care. Join us on this journey to celebrate, understand, and protect the profound relationship we share with the ever-changing tides of the sea.
